Midlife beauty secrets from the Golden Globes
A red carpet report on the hair and makeup pro's, products and tricks behind some of the most gorgeous looks at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.
A special note: this edition was published soon after the awards, and before the news broke of the devastating wildfires across Los Angeles, which continue at the time of writing this update. My love and thoughts are with all the community there, and those who have friends, family and other loved ones in Los Angeles, plus the firefighters and all those working tirelessly to help those in need.

We’re kicking the year off with a special edition, hot off the red carpet of the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.
First up, Gucci Westman (pictured above) worked her makeup magic for Nicole Kidman. She created Nicole’s look using products from her own, Westman Atelier range— an MBE favourite!—including the much-loved, twist-up Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in Petal & Minette.
I LOVE this formula, and reach for it most mornings, dabbing a little high on the cheeks (above the apples, for a more uplifting flush of colour) and blending with fingertips.
Gucci also used the new Lit Up Highlight Stick in Petal, for extra luminosity, and Lip Suede lipstick in Minx.
Hair stylist Adir Abergel styled Nicole’s elegant high ponytail, adding gleam with Virtue Labs styling products and using an old school Denman hairbrush (more on the return to traditional hairbrushes soon).
Demi Moore credited her styling, hair and makeup team for her radiant, award-winning look in a behind-the-scenes reel on Instagram yesterday.
Rokael Lizama was behind her glowing makeup, using all Dior skin care and cosmetics.
“To prep her skin I used the Dior Capture Day Creme, using a nice thick layer to plump and firm,” Rokael shared.
Makeup-wise, he created a contoured base using the Dior Forever Skin Perfect Multi-Use Foundation Stick, in different shades, and the Diorshow 5 Couleurs Eye Palette in #559 Poncho “all over her eyelids and under eye lash to create a smokey effect to contrast the inner glitter eye shadow in #539 Grand Bal.”
For Demi’s cheeks, Rokael reached for Dior Rouge Blush Colour & Glow in shade #257 Dioriviera, explaining the he “swept it on her cheeks, using the pinky highlight color on her cheekbones.”
After outlining her lips, interestingly Rokael opted for a super-glossy lip oil over a lipstick: the Lip Glow Oil in shade #061 Poppy Coral. Lip oils are an extra-hydrating choice, with long-lasting shine, which is why they’re often featured at the MBE (I also love Clarins Lip Comfort Oil, all year round but especially during the winter months).
Below, Dimitris Giannetos putting the finishing touches to Demi’s hair, using products by Moroccanoil.
Naomi Watts stepped onto the red carpet with makeup by makeup artist Mary Wiles, using Le Rouge Francais products.
Among the key products Mary used were Le crayon #No. 710 Calistoga, “applied through the lash line and blended up and out to create depth to the eye”, and Le Mascara #No. 410 Noir Cassiopee (two coats), on top and bottom lashes.
On cheeks, Mary applied Le Blush Creme (we love a cream blush!), “along the apple of the cheek and blended along cheek bone up and out”.
”I applied a little lip oil to the cheekbones to create a subtle highlight to the skin,” said Mary, who opted for Le Rose Tinctorial #No. 040 Licandre for Naomi’s lips.
But before the makeup application began, Wiles used a Body Contour Massager by New Zealand-based body care brand Tronque on the actress’ face, neck, décolletage, and arms.
“I always use it as part of skin-care prep before makeup because it helps with lymphatic drainage and sculpting,” Mary explained. “It helps with any puffiness and water retention, which is really important when people are flying and need to look good for the red carpet. It’s also very relaxing and helps clients feel very calm so they can focus on what they are doing and take away any of the anxiety of the night.”
Michelle Yeoh’s beautiful look, like Nicole Kidman‘s, was created using Westman Atelier products. Makeup artist Soo Park picked several new additions, from the just-dropped Petal Collection.
Among products she used were the Lit Up Highlight Stick (as used by Gucci Westman on Nicole Kidman), Lip Suede Matte Lipstick, new Squeaky Clean Liquid Lip Balm, and Baby Cheeks Blush Stick - all in Petal.
On Michelle’s eyes, Soo used products including Eye Love You Eye Pencil Khôl Brun & Khôl Noir, Eye Pods in Toujours & Rendez-Vous.
Other looks that shone
Award winner Viola Davis lit up the red carpet, with makeup by Sergio López-Rivera (love the cherry lip colour!) and hair by Jamika Wilson.
And Salma Hayek shone in Gucci.
Salma’s hair was styled by Peter Savic, and her makeup was the handiwork of Etienne Ortega.
Tilda Swinton wore custom Chanel, with jewellery and makeup also by the house.
And Jodie Foster shone as she received her award.
