One of the biggest hair colour trends of the moment—darker roots and mid-lengths, graduating to lighter ends—also happens to be a great option for more fragile midlife hair.

The choice to go for darker tones at the roots and mid-lengths, blending out towards lighter ends, is perfect for those who highlight their hair, but want to cut back on the bleach a little, to reduce the risk of damage. Also, the darker tones will make blondes look brighter, and match naturally dark brows.

“It’s currently a major trend, particularly among those with an all-over colour who are looking to introduce some dimension while maintaining a low maintenance look,” Charley Henery, British Colour Technician of the Year and Technical Artistic Director at TONI&GUY, tells the MBE.

Charley works a lot with techniques such as balayage, which is often used to create this kind of look (often referred to as reverse or brunette balayage).

Here, Charley tells us how to get the look, who it’s best for, and what to ask for at the hairdressers (plus, more pic, for inspo!).
